Barbara's Blog

November 7, 2018

WELCOME TO MY BLOG.  On this page you will find little stories on everyday happenings that have either touched me, gotten me thinking, impressed me or have simply inspired me so much that I feel the urge to write down something about it. I may also just be passionate about it. Let's see where this takes me and if this could really become something I will tend to on a regular basis.

17 January 2020 - Gratefulnes
Okay - so I am not exactly the best of bloggers. Yep. Need to work on that. But let's see what 2020 brings. To begin with.... I am grateful for all the things I've learned in 2019. I crossed paths with many wonderful people. Learned lots of new things. I keep a little book of all the positive moments that happen in my life. I don't always manage to write in my book every day, however, when I do I make sure to remember every tiny little aspect of happiness. My daughter once said to me: 'Don't you ever write the negative things of life in your book, Mom?' - 'NOPE' - You always have a choice how to see things. It's up to you.  Of course I experienced sad and unhappy things in 2019. But instead of focussing on the bad I try to see the good. So to give you an example of what I mean, let me tell you about our dog. She had cancer. In December we had to say good-bye. OMG did I cry a lot. Not a day goes by that we miss her. But every day I think of all the joy and happiness she brought to our family, how often she made us laugh, how many exciting adventures we were able to experience with her. And that she no longer is in misery.

So for 2020 not a day will go by that I am NOT grateful for something. A lovely phone call I received, an enlightening talk to a friend, a smile, a bird chirping, a nice meal, a grateful customer, a lovely bride who is just herself, a nice cup of cappuccino, a lovely chat with the lady at the bar, the opportunity to take a picture of something eye-catching or unexpected, happy hockey players when they see their pics, spending time with family & friends,... I could go on and on and on.

Be Grateful!
Enjoy the little things!  :)

I was one lucky girl to be able to take a picture of this beautiful & fun bride on the day of my own  21st wedding anniversary year

10 December 2018 - Friendship

I was fortunate to spend a full day with three of my best friends yesterday. We try to meet on a regular basis and spend time together. Sometimes we go for months without seeing each other. But thanks to modern technology we still get to be in touch on a regular basis.

There are six women in my life whom I'd refer to as 'best friends'. We are totally different characters with different personalities, yet we really match. All of them have had great impact on me, my family and my life over the past years.  They were and are always there for me and my family in all life situations. Just as the other way around. In good times, in bad times, in fun times. We've cried together, we've laughed together, we've had arguments over stupid things but also over bigger things. I've had to listen to their honest opinions and sometimes it hurt but it always helped! The important thing at the end of the day has always been that we've come together again and have always found a way to accept each other's lives and decisions - and in doing so - enriching each other's lives. I'm grateful for these friends in my life because they make it brighter, better, greater, funnier and definitely also more fun. Whoever may have said that age puts a limit to being silly, well I don't agree.... I've learned a lot from and with you, ladies.

I think what makes our friendship so special is that it works in two directions. It's so much about give and take, acceptance, tolerance, love.

You see, there may be things I'd never do the same way my friends are doing them, but that doesn't mean they are right or wrong, or good or bad - they work better that way for them. And luckily they see it the same way the other way around. There are things I do that they'd never do, however, they are okay with this as well because they know me and love me just the way I am.  :)

Thank you for your honesty and simply being who you are! Danke für Eure Freundschaft! Hugs to my ladies in my near vicinity, KA, HD, and in B! You mean the world to me!

06 December 2018

Christmas ist just around the corner

It's been a month since my last post. Lots has happened since. I've run into many people. Some busy, some very busy, some in good moods, some in bad moods...  I've had quite a few opportunities of taking pictures at various events. Lots of nice conversations.

One night though, I just couldn't sleep. It was 3.45am. And being the audio book addict that I am, I decided to download a new book. For whatever reason I came across 'The Happiness Advantage' by Shawn Achor. It's about positive psychology.  Hoping to get that lullaby moment and falling asleep soon I actually ended up listening to the audio book until my brother called to let me know my baby nephew had been born.

The book got me thinking again. I've always enjoyed this type of literature. Did you know that it takes three positive statements to neutralise a negative statement? Isn't it sad how we let the negative things stick so quickly but let go of the positive ones in no time? So I started writing in my little book of positive things again. Every so once in a while I start or continue doing this and it really makes a difference in how you start your day. All I do is write down all the happy and positive things first thing in the morning that have happened to me in the past 24 hours. No time for negative things. It really gets you started in a happier way. Try it :) or better yet, read and listen about it!

So, wishing you all a great and happy time. And not just because Christmas is around the corner... :)

07 November 2018  - A Little Something...

...about the Königsplatz in Munich

and why it's presently full of silk poppy flowers.

The Munich performance artist Walter Kuhn November has filled and transformed the Königsplatz to a sea of 3000 poppy flowers as on November 11th, 2018, we will see the centenary of the Compiègne Armistice and thus mark one hundred years since the end of World War One.  The poppy flower is the international symbol of remembrance and the installation is dedicated to the millions of war victims.

Personally, the installation touched me very much. Its beauty and simplicity says so much. I happened to be standing next to the artist and a group of people when taking some pictures and hearing him speak about his installation and how many people and countries were involved in making this happen and with what meaningful intentions. I will not elaborate as the held conversation was not addressed towards me, however, I can only say it is worth having a look!
